There is more to life.

More than just a bit taken back to hear the President of USofA, Obama declare one of his three objectives for his new term, as the pursuit of happiness. How incredibly shallow, vapid, doomed to disillusionment and dissatisfaction. The ultimate chase for the end of the rainbow that can never be caught and is such a huge let down even if you were ever to get near to it. Despite contrary claims I am all for happiness, take grreat pleasure in it when it comes my way and would grant everyone, if it was in my power, a sprinkle here and there. But not outright hedonism as a way of life, the prime target to see you through life.

It may be my puritanical up bringing or just a reflection of my being so out of kilter with today's thinking but happiness was that incidental that came as the unexpected reward for so more worthy effort. Targeted happiness seldom delivers. You cannot make, organise, precondition that people will respond to any situation and experience happiness. How many miserable, or flat evenings have you endured after going out on the town with all the mates intent on a good time? No amount of booze, food, cheap thrills or provocation can elicit that happy high so sought after. Happiness is a state of mind that arises out of the feel good factor of those around you. That cannot be manufactured or scheduled to order.

The surest way to feel happy is to go beyond the normal routine and push and extend yourself for something worthwhile. From the simplest most mundane, just setting the parameters so your kid can feel safe, secure and enveloped in trust and affection. All the way to loftier ideals. Such as doing some little thing to alleviate the dejection and outright misery of so many peoples lives, to do your bit to maximise the benefits from our amazing technologies, to setting back a fraction this planets plunge into chaos, to striving to attain new heights of imagination or intuition or to offer a small insight into better tolerance or understanding. Whatever from the gamut of possibilities, as long as your aim and objective is to help others, not just to promote your own well-being. Happiness is one of the arisings out of trying to selflessly help others. Their enjoyment on what small relief you have brought engenders your happiness.

Turn your back on hedonism and make it your life mission to help out all those others less fortunate than you are. That is the only sure way to happiness.

Hiding behind words

It is so disengaged, remote, coldly clinical, the descriptions 'surgical strike', 'precision targeting', 'terrorist threat', 'neutralising a real risk', but setting aside the contrived and deliberate detachment of the words, the end result is still the same, a person, a human being, is to be killed. A person with parents, relatives, maybe a spouse probably with their own children has been selected to be killed.

Man facing man with comparable weapons it could be seen as, almost, a glorious and honourable trial of strength, both with an opportunity to overcome the other and to be the victor. But we have moved a long way from man against man. The weapons have led to increasing distance between the men confronting each other. Now the opposing men do not even see it other and it has been, for a long time, not a matter of one man skills pitted against another, but simply who has the best weaponry and tactical support.

Now a man sitting in a room three thousand miles away, in front of a bank of screens can control a drone that picks out it target and then kills it. No chance to retaliate, the target probably even unaware of their imminent death. Back across the world the man goes home to hugs with family, settles infront of TV with a cold beer and life is very normal. Selective targets with known terrorists links, only picked out for death after the most serious of cross checks and only after Presidential authorisation. This not a casual killing campaign but very carefully premeditated and double checked. Sure there is the odd co-lateral damage. That is to say unintended bystanders, men or women or children also are killed but that is their risk for associating with known terrorists. It is essential for the security of the USofA that these people are killed without further risk to American personnel. Except there is a higher overriding concern. Justice.

Our system of Justice, flawed and rough edged that it is, has evolved over centuries to balance all the complexities of human actions with that need, by us all, that the guilty should be exposed and shown for what they are. The Justice system recognises that you cannot not simply take one side of the argument. It has to be challenged by the opposing version. It is not even simply totting up all the incontrovertible evidence on one side as against the other. Even evidence can be skewed, depending on your point of view. It is not even who is the most believable and presents the most likely account of events. It is all that plus the intangibles, of people, how we as an individual perceive and have a sense of their trust and worthiness. That is why in the more complex cases we bring in twelve decent men off the street and leave the outcome for them to decide. Flawed because even unimpeachable evidence can turn out to be just wrong and seemingly good decision can be eventually shown to be wrong. The wrong person judged to be guilty. There simply are no absolutes, guilty or not entirely depends on your point of view, where you choose to place the emphasis, where you decide credence of truth best fits. At least, with the abolition of the death sentence, it is possible to make retribution for those persons who suffer the rough edges of our Justice System.

The Terrorist is our later day Witch where the ducking stool has been replaced with a death drone and all the hi-tech mumbo jumbo wrap arounds to reassure any waverers that this is all clinical, precise, beyond doubt or question. Except it is still based on 'Prove you are not a Witch/Terrorist' on pain of death. Except the selected target is not give any chance to protest their innocence. At least when the executioner looked the condemned in the eyes he was able to reassure himself, by the demeanour of the condemned, that they accepted their fate and guilt. Not with the remote controlled drones. The victim is killed without any chance to protest, to set out an alternate chain of events to the ones assembled by his judge, jury and executioner. All is fair in the cause of a 'War on Terrorism'. As if that expression defined a tangible cohesive body of people who were united, armed and seeking confrontation. Just as in the War of Witchcraft, it justifies all means and ends. History tells us otherwise. For all the hundreds of witches slain for failing to prove they were not witches, witchcraft was not eradicated. Instead their pursuers were besmirched by their abandonment of all basic rights and restraints. Evil continues on as ever but just pops up under another label with other objectives.

When Mr President of USofA next reviews the daily list of people to be killed by the death drone, he would do best to pause for thought. Is this justice I am administering here or just sanctioned slaughter?

Government, the Right to Rule

Now, depending on their business acumen, a sole principle can really fly a tight, lean ship and be very adaptive to changing circumstances. Their weak vulnerability is that they cannot grow beyond around the thirteen subordinates whose out and inflows can be safely monitored and should they become incapacitated, for even a brief period, it all falls apart.

To manage a big enterprise the leader, the top dog, has to delegate day to day running to sub-ordinates. The really successful managers, enpower their sub-ordinates to make their own calls, enthuse them with ever higher objectives and pick them up and encourage them when the inevitable stumble occurs. Top managers possessing these skills and qualities
are rare, very rare to extent of almost being exotic.

Your President cum Prime Minister having been plucked from the street with no particular credentials and having won a beauty contest is unlikely, if not quite inconceivable, to possess such attributes. Likewise Cabinet members selected for favours given or clout within the rulings ranks have no firsthand experience of the departments they are left to run for a couple of years before being switched to another department incase they become too skilled.

So contrary to the public perception of a country led and run by their elected politicians the whole gargantuan hydra-headed government of this country is actually run by civil-servants who play a cat-n-mouse game of wrapping their day to day operational procedures in the current flavour of political party speak. Life really does just carry on same as before, just the words to describe it change.

Lets set this charade behinds us and accept that our political representatives just do not have nor ever will have the expertise, charisma or experience to actually manage and run a booze-up along the river let alone a District Council or the country! What they do have is a political view of how the disparate sectors of our communities may come together and be better able to live in some sort of goodwill and mutual benefit. The Civil Servants really must be left to run the country for the long term and not be beset by short term political goals which is today's norm. We desperately need a committed long term dispassionate governance that can lead us to be a more successful nation, run by the Civil-Servants who do actually do know all the ins and outs of how the country is managed, have the keys of access to minds and information that can keep this country running at full tilt, given a fair wind.

Which is not to say that the Civil Servants therefore have a freehand, far from it. Firstly they must be accountable, no more hiding behind a politicians skirt. If they initiate a course of action and it fails then that is the end of their career. Parliament alone sets or refines the political gaols and in consultations agrees the yardstick measure of achievement and gets to decide whether the set yardsticks have been met. The Civil Servants deliver the gaols and offer evidence of achievement and advise on amplification needed.

This seems to put the relationships back into a better and truer balance, the politicians, within their actual competence levels, set the moral or social agenda and the Civil Services adjusts its on-going long term strategy to show how it is meeting that agenda. A stable governance with a long term view but able to adapt to changing perceptions of societies wants and needs. Of course the Civil Service is more than capable of drowning any government, politician, Prime Minster or President in shed loads of obscuration, obstruction, delay, you name it, any machiavellian
devices and they are sure to have employed it and no doubt will continue to do so as long as they exists as an organisation. But that is not the point. The point is, as is already rooted in the very soul of the Civil Services, their sole purpose is to run the country efficiently. At the moment they duck and dive behind the politicians that they use as Aunt Sallies, I want them to be out there in the open and answerable. It may even bring a new purposefulness to their operations.
